REBECCA SPEAKS: I use this on the advice of herblist Stephen Buhner for LYME DISEASE prevention/treatment when first bitten.
USING ASTRAGALUS OR LYME DISEASE PREVENTION & AFTER BITTEN according to Stephen Buhner
Stephen Buhner, renowned herbalist and author of Healing Lyme, emphasized Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) primarily as a preventive or very early-intervention herb for Lyme disease—not as a treatment for established chronic symptomatic Lyme. Buhner’s reasoning centered on astragalus’ ability to strengthen the body’s frontline immune response, particularly by enhancing aspects of Th1/Th2 balance (often described in his work as supporting Th1/Th2 modulation with notable immune upregulation that may increase certain Th2-associated responses), improving natural killer cell activity, macrophage function, interferon production, and overall immune vigilance. In practical terms, Buhner commonly suggested 1000 mg daily for those living in Lyme-endemic areas as an ongoing preventive strategy, and approximately 3000 mg daily for 30 days immediately following a known tick bite to help the immune system respond aggressively during the earliest window of exposure—before Borrelia burgdorferi has greater opportunity to disseminate.
Why the caution with chronic Lyme? Buhner believed that in people with active, longstanding, symptomatic Lyme disease, astragalus could sometimes overstimulate or dysregulate an already overactivated immune response, potentially worsening inflammatory symptoms in susceptible individuals. In essence, he viewed astragalus as an herb best suited for prevention, immune preparedness, and very early acute support rather than later-stage chronic Lyme where immune complexity is often far greater. This distinction is a hallmark of Buhner’s approach: astragalus for prevention and acute exposure, but generally avoided once chronic symptoms are established.
FOR PREVENTION – Daily use during tick season, especially for gardeners, hikers, etc. – take 1000 mg daily with or without food
IF BITTEN BY A TICK – Increase dose to 3000 mg daily x 30 days.
