Methylene blue should not be used by individuals taking medications that affect serotonin levels—such as SSRIs, SNRIs, or certain tricyclic antidepressants—due to the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially serious condition. It is also contraindicated in individuals with a deficiency of the G6PD enzyme (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase), as it may trigger hemolytic anemia. Additionally, methylene blue acts as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAO-A), and combining it with other MAO inhibitors or medications that interact with this enzyme can lead to adverse effects. Please consult a knowledgeable healthcare provider before using methylene blue, especially if you are taking any prescription medications. If you have any doubts at all, do not use methylene blue until you have checked with your physician.
