Summary: In Ayurvedic (traditional Indian) medicine, boswellia extract is grouped with other resins that are classified as guggals. Ayurvedic physicians have used this group of gummy resins for centuries to treat a wide range of ailments, including arthritis, diarrhea, dysentery, lung disease and worms. Boswellia extract is best known among herbalists as a treatment for arthritis. One of its primary active ingredients, boswellic acid, is an anti-inflammatory that can be used in ointments to ease joint pain. Can be taken internally for pain.
Frankincense is traditionally used to treat coughs. Modern research confirms that it contains phytochemicals that stop the production of leukotrienes that cause constricted airways and inflammation. Frankincense is often described as a stimulant, but its action are only similar to those of stimulants in relieving the symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, colds, and flu. It is currently being researched and used therapeutically in hospitals in Europe.
Precautions: If you take a blood thinning medication such as Coumadin, Plavix, or Trental, do not take frankincense directly (in whole form) by mouth. Frankincense should not be applied to broken or abraded skin.
Suggested Use: Shake well. Twelve years and older, add 1-4 ml (15-60 drops) to a small amount of water and drink. Use 3-4 times daily as needed. To evaporate alcohol before drinking, add to a cup of heated water (no microwave!) and allow to sit for ten minutes before drinking. If an herb is appropriate for children, herb doses for children under 12 are typically 1/2 the adult dose; adjust by weight accordingly or check with a qualified practitioner.
