CASCARA SAGRADA BARK - For more detailed information, click on link...
Rhamnus purshiana – Wildharvested, grain alcohol 60%, spring water. Strength 1:5.
Used to relieve constipation. Has been traditionally used in anticancer formulas.*
Summary: Even conventionally oriented physicians often recommend cascara sagrada to patients suffering constipation after surgery for hemorrhoids. The 1, 8-dihydroxy-anthracenes in cascara sagrada act on the nerves in the intestinal tract, numbing the nerves that hold back stool and stimulating the nerves that propel stool downward. If you experience cramping, you've used too much.
Rebecca adds: Cascara sagrada belongs to a class of herbs known as emodin/anthraquinones. Some other botanicals in this class include pau d'arco, aloe vera, sheep sorrel, and rhubarb, among others.
Precautions: For occasional use only as it is a bulk forming laxative and should be taken with adequate fluids. You should not use Cascara Sagrada or any other laxative if you have appendicitis, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis. Not recommended for children under 12. Unlike buckthorn, cascara sagrada is not known to be safe for pregnant women and nursing mothers.
Suggested Use: Shake well. Twelve years and older, add 1-4 ml (15-60 drops) to a small amount of water and drink. Use 3-4 times daily as needed. To evaporate alcohol before drinking, add to a cup of heated water (no microwave!) and allow to sit for ten minutes before drinking. If an herb is appropriate for children, herb doses for children under 12 are typically 1/2 the adult dose; adjust by weight accordingly or check with a qualified practitioner.
