Lycopus virginicus - Certified Organic, grain alcohol 60%, spring water. Strength 1:5.
Traditionally used for cyclic breast pain, hyperthyroidism.*
Summary: Bugleweed is used in contemporary herbal medicine as a treatment for overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) and breast pain (mastodynia). The lithospermic acid in bugleweed is believed to decrease levels of certain hormones, especially the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). This compound also keeps antibodies from binding to and "burning out" cells in an overactive thyroid gland. By moderating estrogen levels, bugleweed relieves cyclic breast pain in women. Bugleweed has also been used for a great many years as a symptomatic treatment for Grave's disease. Herbalists have traditionally used bugleweed as a sedative, to treat mild heart conditions, and to reduce fever and mucus production in flues and colds.
Precautions: Don't use bugleweed as a substitute for medical care for hyperthyroidism, and high doses may enlarge the thyroid. Its use while pregnant is not recommended.
Suggested Use: Shake well. Twelve years and older, add 1-4 ml (15-60 drops) to a small amount of water and drink. Use 3-4 times daily as needed. To evaporate alcohol before drinking, add to a cup of heated water (no microwave!) and allow to sit for ten minutes before drinking. If an herb is appropriate for children, herb doses for children under 12 are typically 1/2 the adult dose; adjust by weight accordingly or check with a qualified practitioner.
