Summary: Fo Ti is a remedy that is vitally important to Chinese herbology. In China, it is named ‘Ho Shou Wu’ (or ‘Black Haired Mr. He’), after a village elder who took it and was miraculously restored to youthful vitality. In Asian medicine it plays an important role in balancing all the systems in your body, with particular focus on the immune system. In modern herbal medicine, Fo Ti has a variety of uses, including treatment for high cholesterol, constipation and erectile dysfunction (ED). However, it is most important as a tonic for good health, vitality and youthfulness; hence in China it is very popular amongst the elderly.
Precautions: Not to be used while pregnant. Excessive use may cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea. Not to be used by persons with malignant melanoma because of its effect on increasing melanin (hence, the "black hair.")
Suggested Use: Shake well. Twelve years and older, add 1-4 ml (15-60 drops) to a small amount of water and drink. Use 3-4 times daily as needed. To evaporate alcohol before drinking, add to a cup of heated water (no microwave!) and allow to sit for ten minutes before drinking. If an herb is appropriate for children, herb doses for children under 12 are typically 1/2 the adult dose; adjust by weight accordingly or check with a qualified practitioner.
